Why The Water Fountain is Back

Imagine a London where a beautiful drinking water fountain could be found on every street corner. Where people- workers and children alike- would gather to drink fresh water whilst going about there daily business. It harks back to the turn of the century when Londoners gathered to sup on water from old water pumps. Of course whizz forward to 2009 and you'll notice a marked difference. For a start the fountains themselves run on the most efficient technology and are entirely safe to drink from. There would be no danger whatsoever of contracting typhoid fever- a luxury the victorians were most definitely without! The design of the fountains are sleek and modern, easy to drink from without spilling water down your suit, easy to maintain and service, and would have a relatively low carbon footprint. This was Boris Johnson's vision in 2008.

The idea behind a drinking water fountain London, is that it would considerably reduce the amount of bottled water the public would need to shell out money for. This would seriously damage the bottled water industry which might in turn lead to less bottled water being produced, and therefore a greener, more environmentally friendly environment. It goes hand in hand with the bicycle depot scheme. Like France which has various bike stations where people can pick up a bike at certain points and deposit them to a different depot at the end of the day, London wants to encourage people to cycle to work rather than taking their cars in.

In a few years time we may see an entirely rejuvenated and cleaner London, where water fountains and cyclists are commonplace, and unslightly plastic bottle litter and noisy cars are a thing of the past. What a London that would be...
